The theme for this year’s Republic Day is "India - Mother of Democracy" and "Viksit Bharat," reflecting India's role as a democratic nation and its progress.
Republic Day commemorates the historic moment when the Constitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950, replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document.
The significance of Republic Day lies in the fact that it is the commemoration of the day of the emergence of India as a sovereign democratic republic. It marks the shift from British rule to a sovereign nation.
This year, India's Republic Day celebrations hold special significance as the nation marks its 75th Republic Day. The main event is set to take place in New Delhi, where a spectacular parade will commence at 9.30 am.
Republic Day is also celebrated in schools and colleges across India. The day includes hoisting the national flag, parades, cultural performances and educational activities like speeches and debates.
French President Emmanuel Macron will be the chief guest at the Republic Day 2024 celebrations.
