Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe played a key role in strengthening the bilateral relations between India and Japan.

Japan’s longest-serving Prime Minister, Abe, was shot and killed on July 8, while campaigning for a parliamentary election in Nara region. A look at India and Japan’s bilateral relations during Abe’s tenure.

During Abe’s first term as Prime Minister, India and Japan signed pacts for the ambitious Delhi Mumbai International Corridor Project.

Honouring the close relations between the two countries, Abe was invited as the chief guest at India’s Republic Day Parade.

Further strengthening the ties between the two countries, India-Japan Investment Promotion Partnership was announced.

Paving the way for enhanced cooperation in energy security and clean energy, the two countries signed the civil nuclear cooperation pact.
