World Cup: India storm into final after beating New Zealand by 70 runs

Rohit Sharma got India off to an explosive start with a 29-ball 47 that helped India dominate the opening powerplay against New Zealand

Shubman Gill was nearing his maiden World Cup hundred when he started cramping up, and had to retire hurt on 79 with India’s score 165/1 at the time

The biggest moment of the day, meanwhile, was Virat Kohli surpassing his childhood idol and batting legend Sachin Tendulkar by bringing up his 50th ODI century

Shreyas Iyer too played his part in propelling India towards 397/4 with a 67-ball century, his second on the trot this World Cup

Mohammed Shami once again struck in the powerplay, removing openers Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra in successive overs

Daryl Mitchell however, led New Zealand’s fightback from the slow start, and would go on to collect a second century against the Men in Blue this World Cup

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson would play second fiddle to Mitchell with a knock of 69 as the two added 181 for the third wicket

Shami, however, had other plans and ran through the Kiwi batting lineup to finish with match-winning figures of 7/57 that is now the best by an Indian at the World Cup

While India will now set their sights on a third triumph, New Zealand remain without a title despite reaching the semis in nine out of 13 editions
