India is home to some of the most beautiful and distinct classical dances that are renowned worldwide. Here are the eight classical dances in India.

Kathak

It is one of the most popular Indian classical dance styles. It is Uttar Pradesh's traditional dancing style.

Bharatanatyam

It is the oldest form of traditional Indian dance called Bharatanatyam. Carnatic music is mainly used for performance.

Kathakali

It is the oldest form of traditional Indian dance called Bharatanatyam. Carnatic music is mainly used for performance.

Kuchipudi

Kuchipudi is a drama-based dance performance. Its roots are in the ancient Hindu Sanskrit text of Natya Shastra. It is originated from the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Manipuri

Manipuri dance originated in Manipur. It is performed using themes from Ras Lila and Vaishnavism.

Odissi

Odissi dance form comes from the state of Odisha. Most of the gestures and movements (mudras) of the traditional dance are inspired by the sculptors and idols belonging to the ancient temples of India.

Mohiniyattam

It is the second most popular dance form in Kerala. It is traditionally performed by women following a repertoire of Carnatic music, singing, and acting in a play.

Sattriya

Mahapurusha Sankaradeva, a Vaishnava saint and reformer of Assam, introduced Sattriya dance in the 15th century AD. This dance was an artistic way of presenting mythological teachings.
