BJP in 12 states, Congress in 3:  The political map of India

With victories in three of the four recent elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan, the BJP is now in power in 12 of the 28 states on its own.

Additionally, the saffron party is a member of the ruling coalition in four states: Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Sikkim.

With the success in the three states, the BJP now controls nearly half of the 543 Lok Sabha seats.

The Congress has just three states on its own — Telangana, where it defeated the KCR administration, Karnataka, and Himachal Pradesh.

The grand-old party is also a member of the ruling coalitions of Bihar and Jharkhand, as well as an ally of Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK. But, is not a part of the Tamil Nadu government.

The Aam Aadmi Party, with governments in Delhi and Punjab, has become the third-biggest party.

There are currently six national parties in India: the BJP, the Congress, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the CPI(M), the National People's Party (NPP), and the AAP.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government initially took office in the Centre in 2014, it already had governments in few states, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, and Chhattisgarh, among others.

The next round of Assembly elections will take place in 2024. Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh will hold elections next year, while Jammu and Kashmir will hold an Assembly election.
