The 2024 US presidential election is still more than a year away, but the race for the White House is already heating up.

Here are some of the candidates who have declared their intention to run, those who are still weighing their options, and those who have ruled out a bid:

Biden, the oldest US president ever, faces doubts about his age and popularity. He claims he is the only Democrat who can beat Trump and protect democracy.

Trump launched his campaign amid criticism from his party for backing far-right losers. He remains unpopular but boosted by his base and surviving a legal scandal.

DeSantis, a Trump-like governor, has taken conservative stances on abortion and guns. He faces donor worries over his Disney feud, Ukraine stance and Trump rivalry.

RON DESANTIS

Scott, a Black senator from South Carolina, aims to unite his party with optimism. He trails behind Trump and DeSantis, who have more name recognition and achievements.

Haley, a young former governor and UN ambassador, boasts her immigrant roots and conservative credentials. She appeals to 4% of Republican voters as a foreign policy hawk.

Hutchinson, a former Arkansas governor, urged Trump to quit over his legal woes. He claims his conservative record on taxes and jobs qualifies him for the presidency.

Pompeo, Trump’s former secretary of state and CIA chief, has opted out of the race. He was a loyal Trump supporter and echoed his false election fraud claims.

Youngkin, a hedge fund manager and Virginia governor, was a potential Republican candidate. He campaigned on parents’ rights in schools but his staff joined DeSantis.

GLENN YOUNGKIN

Williamson, a best-selling author and self-help guru, is running for the White House again. She failed in the 2020 Democratic primary and now wants to challenge Biden.

MARIANNE WILLIAMSON
