Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the much-awaited Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) on Friday (January 12) around 3:30 pm.
Also known as Atal Setu in honour of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the six-lane bridge is constructed at a total cost of over ₹17,840 crore.
With a 21.8 km stretch, having about 16.5 km length over sea and about 5.5 km on land, it is the longest bridge and the longest sea bridge in India. Here’s all you need to know about the bridge.
MTHL connects Sewri in Mumbai to Nhava Sheva in Uran taluka, Raigad district, cutting travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to 20 minutes from the usual 2 hours.
Speed limit for cars, taxis, light vehicles, minibuses, and two-axle buses is 100 kmph, but restricted to 40 kmph on the ascent and descent of the bridge to ensure safety and prevent disruptions.
Motorcycles, mopeds, three-wheelers, autos, tractors, animal-drawn vehicles, and slow-moving vehicles are prohibited from accessing the bridge.
Heavy multi-axle vehicles, trucks, and buses headed for Mumbai are prohibited from entering the Eastern Freeway. They must use the Mumbai Port-Sewri Exit (Exit 1C) and follow the MBPT Road near 'Gadi Adda' for further journey.
Considered India's most expensive toll road connected to Mumbai, a single journey on MTHL will cost commuters ₹250 and ₹375 for a round trip, while the monthly pass is priced at ₹12,500, 50 times the one-way fare.
