IND vs ENG, 1st Test, Day 3: Ollie Pope Century Powers England Over India's Lead
Producer: Siddarth Sriram
The day started with disappoinment for Ravindra Jadeja, who looked poised for a century but was dismissed early in the day for 87. He was followed by Axar who also could not reach his fifty.
England's unlikely hero with the ball was batter Joe Root, who scalped the elusive Jadeja and Bumrah as well to wrap up the Indian innings at 436 runs.
Trailing by 190 runs, England started off in proper Bazball fashion, with openers Zak Crawley smacking away the Indian bowlers for boundaries at will.
Ravichandran Ashwin though put a quick stop to the onslaught as he scalped Crawley and moved up to 495 Test wickets in his career so far, 5 shy of the iconic 500 mark.
Opener Ben Duckett though kept the pace up, as he slashed for fours with ease, putting India under some early pressure once again.
Then, in came Bumrah, who steamrolled Duckett with a peach of a delivery that bowled him clean out for 47 runs.
India kept the momentum going as they quickly scalped the likes of talisman batters Root and Stokes in quick succession to shift the momentum of the game once again.
On the other end though, Ollie Pope built a steady innings, retaining his wicket and notching up a fifty in calm fashion.
Along with the likes of Ben Foakes, England drew up a great recovery as the pair put up a stellar 100-run partnership.
Pope remained unstoppable as he just comfotably drew up his century with poise and helped England surpass India's total and build a formidable lead.
Axar Patel then took to Foakes with a low-pitcher to knock the stumps off and put an end to the dangerous partnership.
Pope was in auto-pilot as the batter kept on piling the misery with some sweeps and kept England's scoreboard ticking.
The day ended with Pope at the crease for 148*, and debutant Rehan Ahmed at 16*, with England possessing a 126-run lead.
