IND vs ENG, 1st Test, Day 4: Pope's Persistence, Hartley's Heroics Help England Clinch Historic 28-Run Win Over India

Ollie Pope picked up where he left off and got to his 150 at ease.

But, it did not take long for India to strike as Bumrah dismissed Rehan Ahmed and broke the partnership.

Pope though kept the fight going as he slashed and dashed to help England post a challenging target for the home side.

His valiant effort would lead to Pope scoring just 4 runs shy of a double-century, as he departed at 196 and helped England set a formidable target of 231 runs for India to chase.

India's Yashasvi Jaiswal started off in 'Jaisball' fashion as he took to the English bowlers and slashed boundaries at will to get India going.

But it was then time for Tom Hartley to repent for his disappointing first innings, as the spinner scalped away at the Indian top order with ease, removing both openers and Gill as well to place India at 63-3.

India were slowly losing control and were in desperate need of a solid partnership to steer them away from trouble.

But the onslaught from England would not stop, as the spinners wreaked havoc over India, picking off the middle-order too at will and pushed India to a precautious 119-7

Yet again, Srikar Bharat came in and steadied the innings, adding valuable runs to the board and withstanding England's spin attack.

Alongside Ravichandran Ashwin, Bharat drew up a clinical 50-run partnership as the pair seemed in control to lead India to victory

Once again, it was Hartley who struck on time to remove both the batters and claim the first five-for of his career, as England inched closer to a historic victory.

Stokes then took the extension of play – an extra half hour to try and wrap up the game, but not before Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj took India agonising close to the target and fittingly enough it was Hartley who took the final wicket to fall in the final over of the day.

When it seemed like a certainty that the English side would cave in, they came out guns blazing to pull off a historic win by 28 runs at Hyderabad and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
