From Chaudhary Charan Singh to Atal Bihari Vajpayee:  The Bharat Ratna awardees since 2014

The Bharat Ratna is India's highest civilian award, given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions in a variety of fields. Here are the awardees since 2014

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Bharat Ratna, the nation's highest civilian award, for former Prime Ministers PV Narasimha Rao, Chaudhary Charan Singh, and agricultural scientist Dr MS Swaminathan posthumously.

In early February, BJP veteran and former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani was also given the honour of Bharat Ratna.

Earlier in January, President Droupadi Murmu announced that former Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur would be awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously.

Pranab Mukherjee, a veteran politician and the 13th President of India, was awarded India's highest civilian honour in 2019.

Bhupendra Kumar Hazarika, a well-known singer, lyricist, and filmmaker who has made significant contributions to Indian art and culture, was honoured in 2019 for his musical contributions.

Nanaji Deshmukh, a social activist and a key figure in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna for his unmatched contribution to the rural development.

Known for his oratory skills, and inspirational statesman, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee received the Bharat Ratna in 2015.

Madan Mohan Malviya, educationist and founder of Banaras Hindu University, was honoured with Bharat Ratna in 2014. The announcement came on the eve of Vajpayee's 90th birthday and Pandit Malviya's 153rd birth anniversary.
