3 Indian Cities That Have Both IIT And IIM

India has a total of 21 IIMs and 23 IITs. These reputed institutes are located in different cities across the nation.

While the most recent IIT i.e. IIT Goa was founded in 2016, IIM Mumbai (IIM-M) is the most recently established IIM in 2023.

However, only three cities in India have both IIT and IIM.

Earlier recognised as the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai (NITIE Mumbai), IIT Mumbai was established in 1963. In 2023, the institute was converted into an IIM after the suggestion of the noted industrialist Anand Mahindra and HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh in 2007.

Mumbai

Founded in 1958, IIT Bombay was one of the first IITs to be established. Interestingly, the institution received UNESCO funds from the Soviet Union for its establishment, making it an ‘Institute of National Importance’ in 1961.

ammu, like Mumbai, also hosts both IIM and IIT. Notably, both these institutions were founded in 2016. IIM Jammu, with an NIRF Ranking of 41 in the management category as per the 2023 list, is the youngest Indian Institute of Management.

Jammu

Speaking of IIT Jammu, the academic institution followed the curriculum of IIT Delhi till the 2018 batch. However, the students admitted to the BTech program in 2019 and onward were taught as per the IIT Jammu curriculum.

IIM Indore was founded in 1996. Its first batch admitted 37 students. This institution was also crowned with the title of ‘Institute of National Importance’ in 2017.

Indore

IIT Indore was established in the year 2009. One of the eight new IITs, established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, IIT Indore appeared at the 28th spot in the overall NIRF rankings 2023.
