World Protein Day: Affordable sources of protein

Protein is a crucial element of our daily diet and has a plethora of benefits for the body including – building muscle, reducing muscle loss and speeding recovery.

On World Protein Day, let us take a look at a few protein options that won't burn a hole in your pocket.

Sunflower seeds: A vegan source of protein, sunflower seeds have vitamin E and magnesium as well. Snack on them or sprinkle over a salad, they are versatile and cheap. Even pumpkin seeds are a good source of protein.

Eggs: Not only they are loaded with vitamins, minerals and healthy fats, eggs contain a good amount of protein as well.

Lentils: Affordable and packed with protein, lentils are easily available and are also loaded with fibre, iron, potassium and B vitamins.

Amaranth: A gluten-free grain, amaranth is affordable and can be had as a porridge and can be also be used for both sweet and savoury dishes. It is also a good source of folate, magnesium, phosphorus and iron.

Milk: Easily available and easy on the pocket, milk is a very convenient protein choice. It also has calcium which contributes to bone health.

Black beans: Another plant-based protein, black beans are cheap and are an excellent source of protein. The legumes also contain fibre and can be cooked in various ways.
