India's First Underwater Metro Inaugurated In Kolkata

PM Modi inaugurates India's first underwater metro in Kolkata today.

PM Modi was welcomed by a huge crowd in Kolkata.

PM Modi also interacted with metro staff as he travelled in the underwater train.

The underwater metro route stretches between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade.

Out of the total length of 16.6 km for the East-West Metro, underground corridor comprises 10.8 km.

The route will enhance connectivity to key areas such as the IT hub Salt Lake Sector V.

The 4.8 km stretch of the East-West Metro has been constructed at a cost of Rs 4,965 crore.

Howrah will be the deepest Metro station in India situated 30 meters below the ground level.

The train is expected to cover a 520-meter stretch in just 45 seconds.

April 2023 saw the successful trial run through the tunnel beneath the Hooghly River.

The commercial operation is expected to kick off in June-July.
