Maha Shivratri 2024: 10 rules to follow if you are fasting

Consume a single meal on Trayodashi, the day before Maha Shivratri, to prepare your body and mind.

Wake up early on the fasting day to bathe and put on fresh clothes. Before worshipping, bathe the Shivalinga in water, milk, saffron, honey, and Ganga water, followed by the lighting of diyas and incense.

If you're doing Nirjala Vrat (Waterless Fast), avoid both food and water. Nirjala Vrat is a strict form of fasting that represents self-control.

Devotees are permitted to consume vrat-friendly items such as tea, water, coffee, fruits, fruit juice, and dry fruits during Phalahara Vrat.

People who observe Samapta Vrat eat one extra meal in addition to the foods permitted during Phalahara Vrat.

No salt should be consumed on Maha Shivratri.

Keeping yourself hydrated during the fast is important. Additionally, avoid excessive consumption of tea and coffee, which are the leading causes of dehydration.

It is advised not to consume anything that you have offered to Lord Shiva. Doing this is said to bring bad luck.

On the day of the fast, avoid 'tamasik' activities such as eating meat, onion, garlic, gambling, fighting, or abusing.

Avoid cutting nails and hair on the day of Maha Shivratri.
