No Smoking Day is observed on March 13 to create an awareness among people about the dangers of smoking tobacco.

If you are someone who wants to quit smoking or help someone quit, here are a few tips that might help.

Identify and avoid triggers: You need to identify the triggers that make you dependent on cigarettes and try to avoid them. The triggers can be the places you smoke tobacco at or when you are stressed. Some people even smoke while having coffee or alcohol.

Chew something: Whenever you feel the urge to smoke try to chew on something. It can be anything such as hard candy, sugarless gum or some fruit or vegetable. You can also snack on crunchy nuts and seeds.

Physical activity: Physical activity can distract you from the urge of smoking tobacco. Go for a walk, jog or a run whenever a craving hits. If you are at home or in the office, distract yourself with some chore or task like writing in a journal.

Remind yourself of the benefits: Quitting smoking has several benefits and you need to remind yourself of those whenever you are craving. Quitting makes your mind and body feel healthier and better and you end up saving money, among other things.

Delay: Whenever the craving to smoke hits, you can give yourself some time. For example, take 10 minutes and do something to distract yourself in that time. Sometimes these small distractions make a huge impact.
