Former President Ram Nath Kovind-led committee on March 14 in its report advocated the adoption of 'One Nation, One Election’.
Submitted to President Droupadi Murmu, the committee’s report highlights key recommendations for implementing the 'One Nation, One Election’.
The proposal entails aligning state assembly elections with the Lok Sabha polls in a phased manner, aiming for synchronisation by 2029.
What has the committee proposed?
If a state government loses a no-confidence vote in the second year, fresh elections can be held, but the new government will only serve the remaining three-year term.
What are the key recommendations?
The report suggests holding Panchayat and municipal body elections within 100 days of Lok Sabha elections. However, that will need the ratification by state governments.
The committee also recommends a single electoral roll for all elections, and a single elector’s photo identity card for every voter.
