Getting pregnant after 40: What are the risks?

Sidhu Moosewala's parents were blessed with a baby boy. Balkaur Singh, 60 and Charan Kaur aged 58 opted for IVF for their pregnancy. The news sparked a wave of happiness among Sidhu Moosewala's fans.

There are, however, some risks associated with pregnancy at an older age. Let us look at a few of them here.

Older mothers face increased risks of complications during pregnancy. Risk of developing high-blood pressure and gestational diabetes increases.

The chances of having a C-section goes up, mostly after the age of 35. Since there is a higher risk of complications, chances of a C-section delivery are higher.

The chance of having twins increases more with age. Reproductive technologies like IVF also contributes to the same.

Older fathers have a higher risk of passing on conditions such as autism or schizophrenia to their babies.

There are also concerns whether much older parents will have sufficient energy to actively raise a child.
