7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Taiwan: Japan, Philippines Issue Tsunami Alerts

A strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the island of Taiwan on April 3, 2024, resulting in buildings collapse and creating a tsunami that washed ashore on southern Japanese islands.

The epicenter was 18 km south of Hualien at a depth of 34.8 km.

This earthquake was believed to be the biggest in Taiwan since a temblor in 1999 caused extensive damage.

The earthquake rocked Taiwan damaging buildings and triggering tsunami alerts.

It offshore Taiwan rocked Taipei, the capital, knocking out power in several parts of the city.

People were evacuated to higher ground after a tsunami warning following a powerful earthquake in Japan's southern region of Okinawa.

Flights were suspended at the main airport in Okinawa on Wednesday due to a tsunami alert triggered by an earthquake in Taiwan.
