The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on April 2 forecasted an elevated risk of heatwaves in several parts of India due to the El-Nino phenomenon.
The regions expected to bear the brunt of this harsh and arid summer include Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, North Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
As we brace ourselves for a longer and warmer summer than usual, here are some essential tips for coping with heatwaves, as advised by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
Avoid strenuous activities and going out in the sun, especially during the peak hours of 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm.
#1
Stay hydrated by drinking an ample amount of water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty. When on the go, always carry water with you to stay refreshed.
#2
Opt for light-colored, breathable cotton clothing. Wear protective eyewear, use an umbrella or hat, and don suitable footwear in the sun. If working outdoors, wear a hat or use an umbrella and stay cool by applying a damp cloth to your head, neck, face, and limbs.
#3
Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated drinks as they dehydrate the body. Also steer clear of high-protein and stale foods as well.
#4
Opt for ORS and homemade beverages such as lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, and buttermilk to rehydrate the body effectively.
#5
Maintain a cool environment at home by using curtains, shutters, or sunshades during the day and opening windows at night. Use fans, damp cloths, and frequent cold water baths to stay cool.
#6
Do not leave children or pets in parked vehicles. Ensure animals are kept in shade and give them plenty of water to drink.
#7
If you feel faint or ill, see a doctor immediately.
