With petrol prices soaring, fuel efficiency is a top priority for Indian car buyers. Maruti Suzuki leads, but Toyota and Honda’s hybrid vehicles offer more choices.

This list of the top 10 most fuel-efficient petrol cars in India is based on official ARAI figures.  Actual figures may vary based on driving conditions and styles.

Grand Vitara/Hyryder

The Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder, with their efficient 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, Atkinson cycle petrol engine and electric motor, offer a fuel economy of 27.93kpl.

Honda City e:HEV

The Honda City e:HEV, with its 1.5-litre, four-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine and two electric motors, offers a fuel economy of 27.13kpl.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio

The Maruti Celerio, powered by the frugal DualJet K10 1.0-litre petrol engine, is the most efficient pure-petrol car in India with an average of 25.96kpl.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

The fourth-generation Swift, with its all-new Z Series, 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine, offers an average fuel economy of 25.30kpl.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon-R, known for its space-efficient interior, offers a combined average of 24.77kpl with its 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine.

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10

The Alto K10, currently the most affordable car in India, offers an average fuel efficiency of 24.65kpl with its 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire

The Maruti Dzire, powered by the K-Series 1.2-litre engine from the older Swift, is the most fuel-efficient compact sedan on the market with 23.69kpl.

Innova Hycross/Invicto

The Toyota Innova Hycross and Maruti Invicto, with their shared 1.2-litre engine and manual or AMT transmission, offer a combined fuel efficiency of 23.24kpl.

Baleno/Glanza

The Maruti Baleno and Toyota Glanza, with their shared 1.2-litre engine and manual or AMT transmission, offer a combined fuel efficiency of 22.64kpl.

Fronx/Taisor

The Maruti Fronx and Toyota Taisor, coupe-crossover derivatives of the Baleno, offer a combined fuel economy of 22.34kpl with their 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine.
