King of Fruits: The 10 most famous mango varieties in India

Alphonso

Also known as Hapus mango, this is the most expensive variety of the fruit. It is grown in Gujarat, Maharashtra and some parts of Karnataka.

Totapuri

This variety derives its name from the distinctive shape which resembles a parrot's beak. It is mainly found in the southern India, mainly Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is great for salads and pickles.

Ratnagiri

It is mainly found in the Konkan region including Ratnagiri, Devgarh and Raigarh.  This variety of mango weighs 150 to 300 grams. One can easily identify this variety by finding a tinge of red on the top of the fruit.

Chausa

This is found in the northern parts of the country mainly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Interestingly, it is named after a town in Bihar and characterised by its sweet pulp and bright yellow skin.

Langra

This is one of the popular varieties of the mangoes. It was first cultivated in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi and available in India from July to August. It can be identified by its rich green colour and oval shape.

Dasheri

This is a juicy variety of mango. It is sweet, fragnant and fibreless mango. This is mainly grown in North India while countries like Nepal and Pakistan. It initially appreared in the gardens of Nawabs of Lucknow. The mango is available from June and continues to be popular among mango lovers.

Himsagar

This variety is mainly cultivated in West Bengal. It characteristics consists of sweet, juicy pulp along with a distinctive aroma. It has no fibre and majorly used for the making desserts and shake. These generally weigh between 250-300 grams.

Banganaplli

This mango originated in the Andhra Pradesh and is popularly known as Safeda Mango. These mangoes are yellow with a tinge of white, hence the name safeda. Banganapalli are huge in size and available between March and June.

Kesar

Kesar has is generally grown in Gujarat and known as the golden saffron like pulp. It consists of a sweet taste and distict aroma. This falls under one of the most expensive varieties of mangoes.

Malda

Also known as the 'King of Mangoes' in Bihar this is does not contain any fibre. Thus it is a go-to for chutneys and dips. It can be identified by its thin cover and generally has a sweet aroma.
