World Thyroid Awareness Day: 10 signs that your thyroid needs medical attention

Feeling tired:  Low thyroid leads to a low metabolism. Thus, one feels tired most of the time.

Sudden change in weight:  If there is a sudden weight change that cannot be explained, then it is time to visit a doctor. Hypothyroidism typically causes weight gain

Mood swings, depression, anxiety:  People with an overactive thyroid may experience nervousness, irritability and mood swings. While people with underactive thyroid can develop depression or anxiety. 

Insomnia or excessive sleepiness:  High levels of thyroid can give you problems falling asleep or staying asleep. Thyroid can also affect your sleep quality.

Dry or rough skin:  If your skin is turning dry or and nails are brittle consider it to be a sign to visit a doctor. 

Muscle weakness or joint pain:  Mysterious or sudden changes in muscle can signify a thyroid disease. About 80 per cent of people with hypothyroidism experience muscle pain or weakness.

Irregular heart rate:  Heart palpitations are a common sign of thyroid. High blood pressure or high cholesterol levels can signify there is a problem.

Changes in menstrual cycle:  The thyroid plays an important role in the menstrual cycle of a woman. It can cause light heavy or irregular periods.

Goitre, an enlarged thyroid gland:  Untreated signs of thyroid can lead to goitre. It is signified by a swelling in the neck. It mainly occurs when the thyroid gland swells.

Brain fog that causes Brain fog is developed as an effect of hypothyroidism. This slows down the stream of hormones causing difficulty in remembering things, thinking clearly among other things.
