Puttu Puttu is a traditional South Indian dish made from rice flour and grated coconut. It is served with a chickpea curry called kadala curry.  It is a great source of carbs that keep your energy levels high.

Idiyappam A noodle version of the puttu, idiyappam is also made with rice flour. It is served with grated coconut, stew, sugar or even bananas. 

Appam Appam is a think pancake made out of fermented rice batter and coconut. It can be served with coconut chutney, egg curry, kadala curry, sambar or any gravy. It is moderate in calories. 

Uttapam These warm and spongy pancakes are loved by many. Uttapams can be topped with green chillies, tomatoes, onions and sambar. They provide carbs and proteins.

Pongal It is a rice and lentil porridge that is served with black pepper, cumin and ginger and is often served with sambar and chutney. Rava pongal is a good alternative to rice.

Medu Vada This is a deep-fried doughnut-shaped dish that is made with urad dal and goes best with sambar and coconut chutney. If made at home, you can do away with trans-fat and reduce the saturated fat. 

Akki Roti This is a flatbread that is made with rice flour, spices, herbs and vegetables. It is mainly served with stew and curry. It is high in carbs and minerals such as sodium and potassium. 

Paniyaram This is made from the leftover batter of idlis and dosas. A special mould is needed to make this dish and it is also served with sambar, chutneys, and pickles. It is a good source of protein and fibre

Vada Curry As the name suggests, this dish is curry made with vadas. As opposed to the other dishes in the list this is heavy and filling. It is best served with chutney.
