IMD forecasts above normal monsoon in India, Delhi to get rains by June 29

Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on May 27 detailed long-range forecast for the Southwest Monsoon 2024.

According to the weather department, above normal monsoon is likely in India from June to September 2024.

The IMD forecasted above-normal rainfall over Central and South Peninsular India, while below-normal rainfall over Northeast India.

The June rainfall is expected to be between 92-108%.

The onset of monsoon is likely on June 29 in Delhi, and on July 7 in Rajasthan.

The IMD said La-Nina conditions may develop in June to August 2024.

As per IMD, normal rainfall was witnessed between March and May 2024

But, it said below-normal rainfall over parts of Northwest India in May 2024 couldn't be predicted

Deficient rainfall was noted in Northeastern India, rainfall deficit is likely to be offset in Eastern India due to current storm.

The weather department expects the heat waves in Northwestern India  to reduce after May 30.

2 spells of heat waves noted in May 2024, with the highest prevalence in Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
