Alcohol: Widely known for its drying effects, alcohol, common in various cosmetics, can deplete moisture from your lips, making them dry and more prone to cracking. This is especially troublesome if you have sensitive or already damaged lips

What to look for: Check ingredient lists for terms like denatured ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. Instead, opt for alcohol-free lip balms to ensure your lips stay moisturised

Menthol and phenol: Often added to lip balms for their cooling sensation, these can be extremely drying and irritating. They exfoliate the outer layer of the lips, leading to further dryness and sensitivity

Alternatives: Choose lip balms with natural cooling agents like peppermint or spearmint essential oils. These provide a refreshing feel without the harsh side effects

Artificial pigments: Often derived from  coal tar, these can cause skin irritation, headaches and nausea. Producing one synthetic dye can involve up to 25  different additives, increasing the risk  of allergic reactions

What to look for: Avoid lip balms with ingredients such as D&C blue no. 1 or FD&C yellow no. 6. Instead, look for products with natural colourants or no added colour at all

Unpronounceable ingredients: Ingredients with complex, unpronounceable names often indicate synthetic chemicals that can be harsh on your skin. These chemicals can lead to irritation and long-term health concerns

What to look for: Familiarise yourself with botanical names of safe ingredients, such as helianthus annuus for sunflower oil. Choosing products with recognisable and natural ingredients ensure they are gentle and safe

Carmine: Also known as cochineal  extract, carmine is a red pigment made  from crushed beetles. While it's a natural ingredient, it can cause allergic reactions and is not suitable for vegans

What to look for: Look for vegan lip  products that use plant-based colourants. Eco-friendly brands often clearly label their products as carmine-free

Parabens: These are preservatives that are used to extend the shelf life of cosmetics. Parabens are potential endocrine disruptors and have been linked to hormone dysfunction and skin issues like contact dermatitis

What to look for: Choose lip balms labeled as paraben-free. Avoid ingredients like methylparaben and butylparaben to reduce the risk of these harmful effects

Petrolatum (Petroleum jelly or mineral oil): Petroleum jelly creates a barrier on the skin, which prevents it from breathing. This barrier can trap dirt and bacteria and impede the skin's natural healing processes, leading to further dryness and irritation

Alternatives: Opt for lip balms with natural emollients like shea butter, cocoa butter, or hemp seed oil. These ingredients provide hydration and allow the skin to breathe
