The southwest monsoon has made an early arrival over Kerala on May 30. This marks the beginning of the four-month monsoon season in India.

Kerala has been receiving heavy rains for the past few days resulting in a surplus May rainfall.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) revised its rain updates and sounded an orange alert in seven districts.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki were issued the orange alert.

El Nino conditions are prevailing at present, and La Nina may set in by August-September, scientists said.

All districts — except Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod — are on yellow alert today.

Incessant rains have caused widespread waterlogging in several part of the state.

In addition to Kerala, the monsoon has also advanced into most parts of Northeast India today.

Weather scientists said that Cyclone Remal, which ripped through West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday, had pulled the monsoonal flow to the Bay of Bengal, which could be one of the reasons for early onset over the northeast.
