National Lipstick Day: 8 hacks to make your lipsticks long-lasting

Prep your lips  Prepping your lips is one of the most important tasks but is often ignored. Start your prep by exfoliation, then apply a nourishing lip balm followed by your favourite lipstick.

Define your lips  Lip lining is an important step. By outlining your lips, you create a barrier that prevents lipstick from feathering or bleeding, keeping your lip colour intact throughout the day.

Choosing the right formula  Using a long-lasting lipstick formula is the easiest way to make your lipstick last longer. For a classic finish with staying power opt for a matte lipstick while if you are looking for a nourishing option pick creamy lipsticks.

Blot your lips Blotting your lips helps to remove the excess lip colour that tends to wear off. To make your lipstick long-lasting, use a tissue to blot off and gently dab it on your lip. It will take off the excess lip colour.

Apply translucent powder A dab of translucent powder can be just the thing you are missing to make your lipstick last. Place a tissue over your blotted lips and dab some translucent powder and make it last longer.

Avoid oily foods Oil and grease in foods break down your lipstick and make it move around like oil-based makeup removers. Instead, opt for dry foods that you can break into smaller chunks and eat with a spoon or fork.

Stick to multiple thin coats Thick coats take forever to dry leaving a tonne of room for error. Pat your lipstick colour on the centre of your lips, and use a lip brush or your finger to spread the pigment out to cover the full surface of your lips.

DIY a lip stain Lip stains are better than lipsticks. Add a few dots of lipstick over your lips, then use a Q-tip to spread out the pigment and create a tint of colour across your lips. This will give your lips a stain. Top it with a gloss for some shine.
