In today's digital age, prolonged screen time has become a common concern. Whether it's from computers, smartphones, or tablets, extended exposure to screens can have several adverse effects on health and well-being.
Dr. Sujal Shah of Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital explains that while screen time exposure is not a disease, it can significantly affect productivity, especially when working.
Effects Productivity
According to Dr. Shah, prolonged screen time can lead to headaches, redness, and dryness in the eyes. This happens because staring at a screen reduces the blink rate, causing dry eyes.
Effects Health
Dr. Shah also highlights that exposure to blue light, particularly within two hours before sleep, can disrupt sleep patterns.
Effects Sleep
Poor ergonomics while using screens can lead to neck pain and bad posture, as the way we sit in front of screens often changes.
Effects Posture
To mitigate these effects, Dr. S. Natarajan of Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital recommends following the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away from the screen for 20 seconds at something 20 feet away.
Recommendations for Reducing Screen Time Effects
He also emphasises the importance of blinking normally to keep eyes hydrated and reduce strain.
