10 Patriotic Films to Watch This Independence Day

Border (1997)

The evergreen classic from J.P. Dutta is an adaptation of the 1971 Battle of Longewala. The film is famous for some iconic dialogues and scenes, referred to even today.

Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019)

Aditya Dhar’s Uri will evoke the feeling of nationalism in you. The movie is based on the surgical strike that was carried out in Pakistan as a retaliation of the attack done in Kashmir’s Uri in 2016.

Lakshya (2004)

Directed by Farhan Akhtar, the film is based on events during the 1999 Kargil War. Hrithik Roshan played the lead, while Preity Zinta was paired opposite him. 

Raazi (2018)

The film, directed by Meghna Gulzar, is based on Harinder Sikka’s novel Calling Sehmat. It shows how an Indian spy marries a Pakistani Army officer prior to the Indo-Pak war in 1971. 

Rang De Basanti (2006)

Rakyesh Om Prakash Mehra’s film showed how a foreign student lands in India to fulfil her quest to document the story of Chandrashekhar Azad and other freedom fighters of the Indian revolutionary movement. 

Sardar Udham (2021)

Shoojit Sircar's Sardar Udham tells the story of the lesser-known Indian revolutionary, who assassinated Micheal O’Dwyer, Punjab’s former lieutenant governor, to take revenge against him for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)

The Rajkumar Santoshi directorial tells about the sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivram Hari Rajguru to win back India’s independence from the British rule. 

 LOC: Kargil (2003)

Another patriotic film by J.P. Dutta talks about the Indian Army’s victory in the Kargil War of 1999. 

Sardar (1993)

This Ketan Mehta biography is in honour of the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. 

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero (2004)

Written and directed by the legendary Shyam Benegal, the movie throws light on the life of the freedom fighter who fought for India’s independence from behind the scenes, by making diplomatic ties with Japan and Germany, and arranging for an army to fight the British.
