From fertiliser to natural dyes, 10 uses of coffee grounds

Garden fertiliser Coffee grounds contain several key nutrients making it a perfect fertiliser for plant growth. All you have to do is sprinkle the grounds onto the soil. This also helps decrease the content of heavy metals in the soil.

Repelling pests To keep mosquitos, fruit flies, beetles, and other pests away just sprinkle some ground beans around your plants. You can also use them to create a barrier around your plants that slugs and crawlers don’t like to wriggle over.

Removes pet fleas A simple solution for your flea-bothered pet would be to bathe them in used coffee grounds. Lightly massage the coffee on your pet’s fur after shampooing and rinse it off.

Offsets odour Coffee helps to absorb and eliminate foul-smelling odours. To expel the odour of spoiled or fragrant foods in your fridge, just place a bowl of coffee grounds or place it in socks and put it in gym bags, shoes etc.

Natural cleaning scrub Coffee grounds are coarse and help remove hard build-up on surfaces. This helps sanitise and clean build-up from sinks, cookware, grills, and other surfaces around the house.

Skin exfoliator The abrasive particles in ground coffee double up as an exfoliating agent to help remove dirt and dead cells from the skin. You can mix it with coconut oil or honey.

Natural dye Ground coffee is an effective natural choice as compared to the harsh chemical pigments. This dye can be used to colour cotton, rayon, cellophane, linen, paper and much more.

Use as scalp exfoliator Using ground coffee as a scalp exfoliator before shampooing clears the scalp of dead skin cells and product build-up. It helps to stimulate hair growth.

Treat under-eye circles Since coffee has high levels of antioxidants and caffeine contents, it prevents the appearance of ageing and visibly decreases under-eye circles and puffiness.

Scour pots and pans The coarse texture of coffee grounds makes them ideal for scrubbing hard-to-clean kitchen utensils. You can use them to scrape your dishes clean and remove caked-on food from pots and pans.
