Easy South Indian Rasam Recipe

There are times when we do not have the luxury of time while preparing food, yet we crave to eat something aromatic and flavourful. One such easy-to-prepare South Indian recipe is rasam.

This delectable dish can be made with minimal effort. All you need is the most essential ingredient: rasam powder.

To make this delicious concoction, you will need at least four cups of toor dal and one cup each of coriander seeds, cumin seeds and black pepper. You will also require about 10 red chillies, some tamarind, a teaspoon of mustard seeds, ghee, cumin powder, and 2-3 tomatoes.

Begin by roasting the toor dal, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, black pepper and red chillies, separately. The aim is to make sure to extract their respective aromatic essence and then create a symphony of delicious flavours. Let them all cool down.

Once the dry roasted ingredients cool down, put them into the grinder. Pulse them till it turns into a finely ground aromatic powder. Voila! Your homemade rasam powder is ready to be included in any recipe you want.

Now, in a vessel of hot water, dissolve the tamarind and the rasam powder.

Next, add some chopped tomatoes and salt and let it come to a boil.

The next step is to add some tadka. Take a bowl and add two to three tablespoons of ghee. When the ghee is hot add some mustard. As soon as it starts to splutter, add cumin powder to it. Stir it for a few seconds, take it off the flame and add it to the rasam.

Enjoy the flavourful rasam with hot rice.
