MG will introduce solid-state batteries in its EVs by late 2025, offering enhanced safety, longer life, and higher energy density compared to Li-ion batteries. Here are the features of solid-state batteries versus lithium-ion cells:

Enhanced Safety

Solid-state batteries eliminate flammability and volatility risks found in Li-ion batteries, making them significantly safer for electric vehicles.

Improved Energy Density

These batteries boast a 40% reduction in volume and a 25% reduction in mass, leading to greater energy density compared to traditional Li-ion batteries.

Extended Battery Life

Solid-state batteries offer up to 45,000 cycles, significantly surpassing the lifespan of conventional Li-ion batteries, which helps reduce replacement frequency.

Wider Temperature Tolerance

Operating efficiently in temperatures from -25°C to 60°C, solid-state batteries overcome the performance issues associated with extreme temperatures.

Lower Degradation

They experience less degradation over time, maintaining their capacity and performance longer than Li-ion batteries, which lose range as they age.

Simplified Recycling

Solid-state batteries are less complex to recycle compared to Li-ion batteries, reducing energy consumption and environmental impact during disposal.

Reduced Risk of Thermal Runaway

With better thermal stability, solid-state batteries avoid the overheating issues and potential thermal runaway risks inherent in Li-ion batteries.

Lightweight Design

The reduction in mass by 25% makes solid-state batteries lighter, contributing to a more efficient and performance-oriented vehicle design.

Efficient Ion Movement

The solid electrolyte in these batteries facilitates smoother ion movement during charging and discharging, enhancing overall battery performance.

Industry Adoption

Major international brands, including Porsche, Toyota, and BMW, alongside Chinese companies like BYD and Nio, are investing in solid-state battery technology.

SAIC’s Innovative Step

SAIC’s IM motors unveiled their L6 model with a solid-state battery, featuring 368 watts per kilogram density, a 133 kWh capacity, and a range exceeding 1000 km.
