Sweet test: 8 hacks to check the purity of honey at home

Heat test Heat honey in the microwave for 30 seconds. Pure honey will caramelise while impure honey will froth or even burn due to the moisture artificially added to it.

Water test Take a glass of water and add a spoonful of honey to it. If the honey mixes and even dissolves, it is adulterated but if it settles at the bottom of the glass it is pure. Pure honey is thick and dense due to which it settles down.

Thumb test Place a drop of honey on the tip of your finger. Now tip your finger slightly, if the honey drips then it is adulterated since it contains water or syrup making it runny. Pure honey will stick to the fingertip due to its thick texture.

Flame test  Apply a small amount of honey to the tip of a matchstick and light it. If the honey ignites easily, it may be adulterated with alcohol or other flammable substances. If it is unburnt, it is pure honey.

Vinegar test Another way you can check the purity of the honey is by pouring a few drops of honey in vinegar water. If foaming arises from the mixture then it is an adulterated one.

Paper test Drop a little honey onto a blotting paper or a piece of tissue paper, if the honey is absorbed in the paper then it is adulterated honey while if it sticks to the paper then it is pure honey.

Bread test Spread a thin layer of honey on a slice of fresh bread. Pure honey will harden the bread after a few minutes due to its low water content while impure one will make the bread soggy.

Taste and aroma test Although not one of the best tests, it is still used to test the purity of honey. Pure honey also has a distinct natural aroma while adulterated ones have a flat, overly sweet, or artificial taste.
