The Lonar lake is situated near the town of Lonar in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra. It is a national geological heritage site.

It was first discovered by a British officer C.J.E Alexander in the year 1823.

Lonar lake is ranked among the world’s five largest craters and the third-largest saltwater lake in the world.

The Lonar lake has also been associated with Indian mythology. It has a reference as Panchapsar in the Ramayan written by Valmiki.

It is believed that when Lord Rama was flying on his way from Sri Lanka to Ayodhya, he showed a place to his Sita. Researchers claim that he was referring to this lake.

The lake is an incredible place to witness migratory and local birds.

Apart from birds, gazelle, langur, bats, mongoose, barking deer and chinkara are also to be found in the surrounding jungle.

Several temples are in the vicinity of the lake, including the famous Daitya Sudan temple.
