Jasprit Bumrah was announced as the captain of the Indian cricket team, over Hardik Pandya for the three-match T20I series Ireland, which starts August 18.
This will not be Bumrah’s first stint as captain, having skippered the side in a one-off Test match last summer in England.
Ruturaj Gaikwad was named vice-captain, as the selectors opted to rest all senior team members with the impending Asia Cup, due to begin a week after the Ireland series.
Karnataka seamer Prasidh Krishna also made the cut to the 16-member squad after being out of action since August 2022 due to a lumbar stress fracture.
The swashbuckling youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal, along with opener Shubman Gill, also secured a spot in the squad following his impeccable run of form in Test cricket and the IPL.
Another notable addition is that of Sanju Samson. Samson has been given umpteen chances without having cemented his place. The Ireland series is another chance for him to make it count.
Suryakumar Yadav is a T20I specialist who has smacked 3 tons in the format. With 267 runs in 6 games this year, the right-handed batsman is the leading run-getter for the team.
Another new addition to the side is that of debutant Tilak Varma. He is an uncapped player who showed great potential and put on a stupendous batting show in IPL 2023.
For the spinners, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravi Bishnoi have been inducted into the India squad for Ireland T20Is. Chahal is the key spinner for India in T20Is, while Bishnoi is making a comeback after last playing for India in 2022.
Other pacers except for Bumrah in India’s squad include Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan and Arshdeep Singh. Right-arm pacer Mukesh Kumar is also part of the IND vs WI T20I series.
