The KonMari method is a tidying and organising philosophy created by Marie Kondo, a Japanese organising consultant and author. It is based on the idea of organising by category rather than by location, and it involves a systematic process of discarding items that no longer bring joy and cherishing those that do.

Commit to tidying up

The first step is to make a firm commitment to the tidying process. It's essential to set aside enough time and mental energy to complete the process effectively.

Imagine your ideal lifestyle

Before starting, envision how you want your living space to be. Understand your ideal lifestyle and the kind of environment that would bring you the most joy.

Tidy by category, not by location

Instead of tackling one room at a time, organise by category, such as clothing, books, papers, miscellaneous items and sentimental items.

Follow the order

Within each category, stick to a specific order. Clothing is often the easiest category to begin with, while sentimental items can be the most challenging.

Does it spark joy?

When deciding whether to keep or discard an item, hold it in your hands and ask yourself if it sparks joy. If it brings you joy, keep it. If not, thank it for its service and let it go.

Discard before organising

Before finding a place for the items you're keeping, complete the discarding process. Get rid of all the items that do not bring you joy.
