10 steps you can take to deal with a difficult boss

Before you try to solve issues with your boss, be sure you actually have one. Is their behaviour justified, or are you being too harsh on him or her?

Don’t take it personally. It's work, and while the circumstances might be difficult, bad feelings can make it worse. Assess the problem objectively from your boss's standpoint.

After analysing what may be affecting your boss, examine how you may be contributing to a difficult relationship.

Don’t produce low-quality work out of spite or frustration. It will harm you even more.

Knowing your rights and what you can and cannot tolerate is important. Maintain your integrity, even if it means taking the boss on sometimes.

Inform your manager of the inappropriate behaviour. When sharing your issues, focus on particular behaviours. Inform your boss of the repercussions of their actions.

Stay professional even if you're feeling overwhelmed and upset with your boss. Maintain control of your temper and your voice.

Find ways to be more engaged with the positive aspects of your job that could help offset the negatives.

Don't speak badly about your boss to others. Don't say anything you don't want her to hear.

To summarise, no work is worth your mental health. A terrible work atmosphere combined with a depleting boss is cause enough to leave.
