Bharat NCAP is set to revolutionise vehicle safety in India. With a focus on global standards, it aims to assure vehicle safety, reduce healthcare burdens, and encourage safer driving practices.
Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) is a new initiative by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
This program will allow automakers to compete on a global platform by offering their cars for testing.
It aims to introduce safer driving practices and reduce healthcare burdens.
The program could lead to incentives from the insurance sector.
The program will come into effect from 1st October 2023.
Around 30 cars have already been offered for crash testing under Bharat NCAP.
The cost of testing in India is around Rs 60 lakh.
Testing under Bharat NCAP is voluntary, but safety-centric buyers will drive automakers to get their vehicles tested.
The program will provide safety ratings, allowing buyers to select vehicles based on these ratings.
The program aims to minimize the risk of road accidents and fatalities.
For automakers, testing would ensure a higher market share while being able to compete on a global platform.
The program will lead to the development and use of cutting-edge components and encourage innovation.
All vehicles falling under the M1 category, approved for carrying up to 8 passengers +1 driver, are eligible.
Cars will be assessed on the basis of frontal impact, side impact, and side pole impact.
Bharat NCAP crash tests involve vehicle nomination, random selection of a base variant, dispatch to the testing facility, and result compilation.
