Iyengar's 1952 meeting with violinist Yehudi Menuhin was instrumental in him turning into an international guru.

His disciples included J Krishnamurti, Jayaprakash Narayan, Elisabeth (Queen of Belgium), Aldous Huxley, and actress Annette Bening.

Iyengar Yoga is described as an exercise focusing on the structural alignment of the physical body.

In Iyengar yoga postures are held for a long time. There is also an extensive use of props such as belts and blocks.

Iyengar yoga descends from the classical Hatha yoga. In it, there is precise attention to detail when compared to other forms.
