Women, Life, Freedom: Jailed Iranian activist awarded with Nobel Peace Prize

Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian human rights activist, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2023.

Mohammadi, currently imprisoned, has been awarded the prestigious prize for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran

She fights to promote human rights and freedom for all and she was part of the women rights protest of 2022 in Iran

The Iranian regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes

Mohammadi contributed to Iran’s ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ movement that was triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old woman who died in police custody last year

An engineer by profession, Narges Mohammadi had started to distinguish herself as an advocate of women’s rights in the 1990s itself.

She also worked as a columnist in various reform-minded newspapers.

Mohammadi is currently serving multiple sentences amounting to about 12 years imprisonment. Charges include spreading propaganda against the state
