Countries where same sex marriage is legal

As the Supreme Court of India prepares to deliver a landmark judgment on the legality of same-sex marriage, here is the list of countries that have already legalised same-sex marriage:

Marriage Equality

Same-sex marriage is legal in 34 countries worldwide. This includes nations like Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, France and Germany. 

Marriage Equality

Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the UK, the USA and Uruguay have also legalised it.

India’s Upcoming Ruling

The Supreme Court of India is set to deliver a landmark judgment on the legality of same-sex marriage in the country.

Judges Panel

The judgment will be pronounced by a five-judge bench, headed by the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.

Legalisation Process

23 countries legalised same-sex marriage through legislation. Australia, Ireland and Switzerland did so after nation-wide votes.

Court Decisions

10 countries legalised same-sex marriage through court decisions. These include Austria, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico and Slovenia.

Mandated Legalisation

South Africa and Taiwan enacted legislation legalising same-sex marriage after courts mandated them to do so.

International Institutions

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Justice have issued rulings in favour of same-sex marriage.
