MP polls 2023:  What we know about Congress veteran Kamal Nath

Kamal Nath is a nine-term member of the Chhindwara Assembly, and will run again from the same seat in the upcoming elections in Madhya Pradesh.

Nath was sworn in as the 18th chief minister of Madhya Pradesh in 2018 for approximately 15 months, but he resigned after a political crisis.

Kamal Nath was born in Kanpur on 18 November, 1946, to Mahendra Nath and Leela Nath. He is an alumnus of The Doon School and graduated in Commerce from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata.

Kamal Nath entered politics at a young age, inspired by his family's political background. He began his political career by joining the Youth Congress and gradually rose through the ranks.

Hailing from a business family, Nath has been involved in politics for nearly four decades, having run for and won his first election in 1980. 

Kamal Nath has held various ministerial positions at the state and central levels. Notably, he has served as the commerce minister, transport minister at the Centre during the UPA tenure.

Kamal Nath was named India's richest Cabinet minister in 2011, with stated assets totalling Rs 263 crores.

Indira Gandhi personally travelled from Chhindwara to file his nomination in 1980, and famously remarked, "He is my third son." He has worked with the three generations of Gandhis — Indira, Rajiv, Sonia and Rahul.

He has faced allegations related to his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
