Severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue over parts of North India, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat over the next 5 days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warned on May 21.

As the mercury rises, the scorching heat can be harsh on the eyes resulting in discomfort, fatigue, and even long-term damage if not properly managed. Take a look at some effective ways to reduce eye strain during summers:

Invest in high-quality sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to serious eye conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

1. Wear Sunglasses with UV Protection

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Proper hydration is essential for maintaining the moisture balance in your eyes, preventing dryness and irritation.

2. Stay Hydrated

The summer heat can dry out your eyes, especially if you spend time in air-conditioned environments. Use preservative-free artificial tears to keep your eyes lubricated and comfortable.

3. Use Artificial Tears

A wide-brimmed hat can provide additional protection against the sun's rays, reducing glare and direct sunlight exposure to your eyes.

4. Wear a Wide-Brimmed Hat

Extended screen time can strain your eyes, especially when you are outside in bright light. Take regular breaks using the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

5. Reduce Screen Time

Ensure your digital devices have appropriate brightness and contrast settings. Consider using blue light filters or screen protectors to reduce eye strain from prolonged screen use.

6. Adjust Digital Devices

If you work from home or an office, make sure your workspace is well-lit but not too bright. Use blinds or curtains to control natural light and reduce glare on your screens.

7. Create a Comfortable Workspace

Air conditioning can dry out the air and your eyes. A humidifier adds moisture to the air, helping to prevent dry eyes, especially in indoor environments.

8. Use a Humidifier

If your eyes feel tired or irritated, use a cool compress to soothe them. This can help reduce inflammation and refresh your eyes after a long day in the sun.

9. Apply Cool Compresses

Include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, and zinc in your diet. These nutrients are known to support eye health and can help protect your eyes from the damaging effects of the sun.

10. Eat Eye-Healthy Foods
