10 Key Facts About 9/11 U.S. Terror Attacks

The September 11, 2001 attacks, often referred to as 9/11, were a series of coordinated terrorist actions in the  United States. 

The terrorist organization Al-Qaeda, led by Osama bin Laden, claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The attacks were carried out by 19 terrorists who hijacked four commercial airplanes. 

Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives, and over 6,000 were injured in  the 9/11 attacks. 

Two airliners were hijacked by terrorists and flown into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York.

Both towers eventually collapsed due to the impact and ensuing fires.

Another flight was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.

A fourth plane was also hijacked, but passengers on board fought the hijackers. The plane ultimately crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.

The U.S. launched the War on Terror, which included military operations in Afghanistan to dismantle Al-Qaeda and its Taliban hosts. 

Osama bin Laden was shot and killed at his compound in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad by United States Navy SEALs.
