12 Indian Films Nominated For Palme d'Or

Thirty years ago, the Malayalam film directed by Shaji N. Karun was in competition for the Palme d'Or. It lost to Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.
Satyajit Ray's masterpiece based on Rabindranath Tagore's novel was in competition. However, the honour went to Paris, Texas by Wim Wenders.
The Bengali film by Mrinal Sen was nominated. Though it lost the top honour to Narayama Bushiko by Shōhei Imamura, the film won the Jury Prize.
M. S. Sathyu's drama film was nominated for the Palme d'Or (then called Grand Prix du Festival International du Film). It lost to The Conversation by Francis Ford Coppola.
The Bengali film by Satyajit Ray earned a nomination for the Palme d'Or. The winner was the Brazilian film, O Pagador de Promessas by Anselmo Duarte.
Satyajit Ray earned his third nomination for this Bengali fantasy comedy film. It lost to The Cranes are Flying by Mikhail Kalatozov.
Rajbans Khanna's documentary film was nominated. It lost to Friendly Persuasion by William Wyler. Khanna did win the Special Mention (Short Film).
Bimal Roy's classic earned the Palme d'Or (then called Grand Prix) nomination. While it lost to Gate of Hell by Teinosuke Kinugasa, it did win the International Prize.
The Raj Kapoor directorial earned the Grand Prix nomination. However, the honour went to The Wages of Fear by Henri-Georges Clouzot.
The Marathi film directed by V. Shantaram snagged the Grand Prix nomination. It lost to Two Cents Worth of Hope by Renato Castellani and Othello by Orson Welles.
Chetan Anand's Neecha Nagar was the first - and so far, only - Indian film to win the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film. It tied with 10 other contenders.
