5 Desi Dal Recipes Under 20 Minutes

There's nothing quite as wholesome and satisfying as a bowl of dal when it comes to Indian meals. Here are five desi dal recipes you can prepare under 20 minutes.

Classic Dal Fry

Wash dhuli urad ki dal then soak in 2 cups of hot water for 2 hours. Take a pressure cooker, heat ghee, and add cumin, asafoetida, ginger, and green chillies. Add the soaked dal along with turmeric, salt, and chilli powder. Add 2 cups hot water, bring to a boil, and lower the heat. Cook covered for about 10 minutes.

Oil-Free Dal Tadka

Wash and soak masoor dal. Take a pan, pour water in it, and add the dal to it with salt. Bring to a boil. In another pan, add ginger, garlic and onion. Now, add garam masala, turmeric, kasoori methi, and coriander powder. Mix well and add the mix to the simmering dal. For tadka, heat some oil in a pan, and add mustard seeds, curry leaves, asafoetida, red chillies, and cumin seeds. Pour this mix over dal.

Dhuli Moong Dal

Add washed dhuli moong ki dal in a heavy bottom pan with 3 cups of water, turmeric, ginger, and salt. Bring to a boil and simmer till cooked. Heat ghee in a pan, add asafoetida and cumin seeds. Add onions and tomatoes and stir fry. Add coriander powder, chilli powder, and garam masala. Now, add cooked dal to it. Bring to a boil and garnish with coriander leaves.

Bengali Style Chana Dal

Add soaked chana dal in a pressure cooker. Add pan-fried coconut to it along with cinnamon, clove, bay leaf, raisins, fried coconut, turmeric and salt. Add some water, mix well and pressure cook it. For tadka, take ghee in a pan, and add cumin seeds, bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and red chilli whole. Saute them well and pour them over the cooked dal in the pressure cooker.

Urad aur Chane ki Dal

Pressure cook urad and chana dal with 5 cups of water, salt, and ginger for 6 to 7 whistles. Heat ghee in a pan, add cumin seeds, green chillies, and asafoetida. Add the coriander powder, garam masala, and black pepper. Mix well and add the cooked dal to this mix, Bring to a boil and then simmer for some time. Serve hot, garnished with cream.
