World Kidney Day is observed on the second Thursday of March and is a global health awareness campaign focussing on the importance of kidneys. So, here are a few tips to help you keep your kidneys healthy.
Exercise: Regular exercise not only reduces weight but also keeps the body healthy. You don’t need to have a rigorous workout schedule. You can keep your kidneys healthy by simply walking, running, cycling, jogging or even dancing.
Check and manage diabetes: If you are someone who has diabetes or at risk of getting it, ensure that you are managing it correctly. A healthy lifestyle and medicines prescribed by a doctor keeps diabetes in check which in turn reduces the risk of kidney damage.
Reduce intake of over-the-counter pills: If you are someone who pops pain medications on a regular basis, it might be affecting your kidneys. Consult a doctor and chalk out a plan for yourself to avoid the usage of OTC pills.
Quit smoking: Smoking is the worse that you can do to your body. It damages blood vessels, affects heart and lung health and puts you at risk of cancer. Smoking also leads to slower blood flow throughout the body and kidneys.
Drink plenty of fluids: Hydration is key for a healthy body and kidneys. Water clears toxins from the kidneys and lowers risk of kidney diseases. 1.5 to 2 litres of water in a day helps maintain healthy kidneys.
