Turnips have a unique taste and are great for modifying the texture of a dish. Here are some turnip recipes you can prepare for a healthy and flavourful home meal.
Turnip Curry
Sauté the onions, garlic, and ginger in a pan. Add coriander, cumin, turmeric, and garam masala. Add the diced turnips next, and cook until they are tender. Add diced tomatoes and a little vegetable or chicken broth. Simmer the curry. Stir in some coconut milk towards the end of cooking for extra richness.
Turnip Poriyal
Heat some oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, green chillies, curry leaves, and urad dal. Add diced turnips and saute until they become tender. Season it with salt, turmeric, and water. Garnish it with chopped coriander leaves and grated coconut.
Buttered Turnip Puree
Peel and roughly slice the turnips into tiny pieces. Bring them to a boil in salted water until they are tender. Thoroughly drain them and put them back in a saucepan. Mash these boiled turnips. Season the puree with salt, white pepper, and a small pinch of nutmeg. Serve it as a side dish for roasted meats or seafood.
Turnip Potato Garlic Soup
Saute onions and garlic in butter in a pan. Add the diced turnips and potatoes, and the chicken or vegetable broth. Blend the soup until it's smooth. Add salt, pepper, and maybe a little thyme or rosemary.
Turnip Pickle
Peel and cut turnips into thin slices or small cubes before preparing the pickle. Heat vinegar in a skillet with sugar, salt, and any spices such as red chilli flakes, turmeric, and mustard seeds. Add turnip pieces once this mixture is boiled. Simmer it for a few minutes. Transfer the pickle to sterilised jars and allow it to cool.
