Saffron is mostly grown in Kashmir and parts of Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka because of the favourable climate conditions and soil. Here is a step-by-step guide to growing saffron at your home.
Step 1
In India, three types of saffron are cultivated, namely Creme Saffron, Aquila Saffron, and Lacha Saffron. You can buy saffron corms whichever variety you like from the market.
Step 2
Add cow dung to the soil to make it fertile. Add phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium in the ratio of 2:3:2.
Step 3
Transfer this soil mix to a pot or a deep rectangular container. Dug deep holes in the soil.
Step 4
Now, sow corms into the soil, and add extra soil on the surface in a loose pattern.
Step 5
Water the soil so that it remains damp. When the soil seems to be drying out, irrigate it.
Step 6
Within three to four months, saffron flowers will be ready for the harvest. It is advised to harvest the flowers between sunrise and 10 am.
Step 7
Pluck the red-brown stigma in the flowers and dry them under the sun for at least five to six days.
