8 Differences Between Bananas and Plantains

Compared to plantains, bananas are often smaller and sweeter. Compared to bananas, plantains are bigger and less sweet.

Normally, bananas are consumed when they are ripe and have a yellow colour with some brown patches. When fully ripe, they are tender and delicious.

Plantains taste less sweet and more starchy. They are normally not eaten fresh and are frequently utilised in savoury cuisines.

When ripe, bananas have a smooth, creamy feel.

Cooking is the main application for plantains. They are used in many savoury recipes, such as chips, and can be fried, boiled, roasted, or mashed.

Compared to plantains, bananas contain more sugar and less starch. They are an excellent source of dietary fibre, vitamin C, and potassium.

Plantains can be any colour, including green, yellow, and black.

Although banana peels are thin and simple to remove, people rarely eat them.
